5 Branding & Marketing Strategies for the Filmmaking Industry
Hello creatives!
Today I am breaking down some key branding and marketing strategies for the filmmaking industry. These strategies help build repertoire with other professionals and brands in your niche as well as build awareness for your target audience.
But first things first:
Who needs to understand branding & marketing strategy in filmmaking?
For the most part, it comes down to three groups of professionals:
Small film and distribution companies need to learn branding and marketing strategies so they can serve their filmmakers' debut films and back list catalog.
Talent agencies need to understand branding and marketing strategies so they can assist their clients in the process building their personal and professional brands.
Both traditional and indie filmmakers especially need to understand branding and marketing strategies so they can bridge the gap in their film studio and distribution company's branding & marketing services.
What are the biggest branding and marketing strategies in filmmaking right now?
While there are a plethora of options and innovations that are being created every year, I have gathered a list of 5 strategies for branding and marketing your brand as a filmmaker that will give you a leg up.
Digital advertising on streaming platforms such as Tubi, Documentary+, Roku Ad Manager are becoming critical to raising brand awareness.
Do not underestimate the power of organic social media. Utilize online film enthusiast communities to gain visibility and thought leadership.
If you are an established brand with even a small following, get creative with tapping into existing fanbases, if possible, with merchandise and user generated content on social media.
People want to learn more about the behind-the-scenes of the craft so share the journey of making the film through interviews, press releases and social media content.
While this does not hold as much weight as it used to, it’s still a good strategy: find genre-specific award entries to boost visibility and notoriety as a solid filmmaker in your niche.
Another tip I have for staying up to date on the latest happening in the film industry is to listen to podcasts and find Youtuber who are also filmmakers. I have binged more than my fair share of the Indie Film Hustle podcast lately. I highly encourage anyone interested in the field to listen to a few. The episodes are long, but worth it.
I hope this post was helpful. If you are a filmmaker, let me know in the comments below what strategies you have used! I would love to hear from you.
Until Next Time,
